AWE ’24: Sony Provides Spatial Computing without a Headset Requirement

This week, at AWE 2024, Sony Electronics introduced new 3D visualisation tools that enable users to see and interact with XR content without smart glasses via the ELF-SR2 (27-inch) and ELF-SR1 (15.6-inch) Spatial Reality Displays to enable professional RT3D workflows and considerations.

Thanks to the new display technology, users can avoid invasive VR headsets, promoting longer XR content use periods without the perceived hardware hurdles.

Users can now collaborate over RT3D workflows using Sony’s enhanced display solution, which includes content creation, design, and visualization capabilities.

Moreover, Sony combines its new spatial displays with echo3D service, enabling the user experience with a 3D digital asset management platform with dedicated social applications.

The echo3D integration provides professional users with a secure avenue to manage, store, control, optimize, and share 3D content. For example, echo3D integration can help users import 3D assets seamlessly and be ready for a range of workflows, including storage, delivery, and analysis.

Sony Electronics will display the system on the expo floor at AWE 2024, ready to showcase how XR goes far beyond headsets.

More than Just Headsets

The XR marketplace isn’t just headsets; end devices that leverage spatial data include smartphones, computer monitors, automated cars, and robotics—any form of hardware translating spatial XR data into an end-user experience or solution.

Sony clearly understands this with its latest product. XR and spatial computing are reaching greater heights than just headsets, and Sony is not the only firm on this route.

NVIDIA has notably experienced massive success in applying spatial computing technology to other sectors.

In the opening keynote of NVIDIA GTC, CEO Jensen Huang discussed some of the company’s recent advancements, such as genAI and robotic tools. He also emphasized the efforts of NVIDIA’s partners in promoting XR/spatial computing solutions in the workplace through the use of the NVIDIA Omniverse platform. Partners like Siemens, Microsoft, AWS, Wistron, and others were featured at the event.

NVIDIA is enhancing the Omniverse platform for its industry partners by offering cloud-based APIs that enable clients to utilize digital twin workflows. Huang mentioned that “everything manufactured will have digital twins.” Omniverse is the operating system for creating and managing physically realistic digital twins, which clients can employ for design processes, automation workflows, and predictive weather solutions.

The market is proving that XR has increasing value for enterprises via digital twins, simulations, and 3D monitors. In the future, businesses may be able to leverage XR’s potential without ordinary headset onboarding hurdles.
